Family Support and Self-Management Behaviors Among Adults Living With Type 2 Diabetes in Community Settings
Keywords:
Family support, Self-management, Type 2 diabetes, Community health, Primary careAbstract
Purpose – This study examined the relationship between family support and self-management behaviors among adults living with type 2 diabetes mellitus in community settings.
Methodology – A quantitative analytical cross-sectional design was used. The manuscript model involved 471 adults with type 2 diabetes from selected community health centers in Semarang City, Central Java, Indonesia. Family support was assessed using the Hensarling Diabetes Family Support Scale, and self-management was assessed using the Indonesian Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression were applied.
Findings – Family support showed a moderate positive relationship with self-management behaviors (r = .516, p < .001). In the multivariable model, family support remained the strongest predictor (β = .497, p < .001), while diabetes-related complications were negatively associated with self-management (β = -.103, p = .010). The model explained 29.3% of the variance in self-management behaviors.
Implications – Community diabetes programs should assess family support and involve appropriate family members in education, behavioral goal setting, and long-term self-management support while maintaining patient autonomy.
Originality – The study framework highlights naturally occurring family support as a proximal social resource for diabetes self-management and extends the Individual and Family Self-Management Theory to community-based primary care.
