Cross Border QRIS and Changes in Indonesian Tourists’ Spending Evidence from Cross Border Digital Payment Implementation

Purpose - This study evaluates whether Cross-Border QRIS implementation changed Indonesian tourists’ destination spending, transaction frequency, and expenditure composition.
Methodology - A quantitative quasi-experimental design applies staggered Difference-in-Differences to 12,486 trips observed during 2022-2024. The analysis exploits the different implementation dates in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore and uses never-treated and not-yet-treated destinations as comparisons.
Findings - Simulated estimates prepared for manuscript development indicate that implementation increased total destination spending by 11.40% and transaction frequency by 2.84 transactions per trip. Discretionary spending rose by 18.29%, while essential spending did not change significantly.
Implications - Payment interoperability can expand tourist expenditure across restaurants, attractions, transport providers, and small retailers. Providers should combine convenience with real-time budget information.
Originality - The study moves beyond QRIS adoption intention and uses staggered policy implementation to identify post-adoption economic effects.
